got its name after the capital, Puerto Santa Maria while under Spanish
rule. Puerto Santa Maria has been renamed Port Maria.
Port
Maria is one of the most beautiful towns. It is spreaded out along
the curve of the bay, with the Qutram River running through, it
looks out accross the sea to a small Cabarita island standing guard
offshore. It has been said that the Spaniards and the Tainos were
the early settliers.

HIGHGATE |
HIGHGATE
is a steadily growing town
which is situated in the parish of St.Mary. It is said to have derived
its name from Highgate House, the private residence of the Marquis
of Silgo, Governor of Jamaica from 1834-36, who named it after a
residential district of Highgate near London. The Quakers were very
active in the town where they established craft industries.
Highgate
sits on the top of a cool ridge, which rises between 1,200 to 1,500
feet. It is far off the coast of Annotta Bay, but it overlooks the
beautiful vale of Richmond, another town in the parish of St. Mary.

ANNOTTO
BAY |
Annotto
Bay – in St. Mary, was
known to Jamaica’s first inhabitants, the Arawaks, who gave
it the name Guayguata, the meaning of which is not known. The present
name Annotto Bay is said to be derived from the annotto palnt. Annotto
Bay is on the railway line between Kingston and Port Antonio.
At
the town's center is an old courthouse that now houses the office
of the collectors of taxes. The paltry remains of Fort George. The
town has a hospital, police station, and National commercial Bank
situated along the Main Street.

Islington
is the largest district in the parish of St.Mary,
and is located about midway between the capital town of Port Maria
and Highgate. Islington like other towns in the parish is constantly
growing in regards to its population and development. The town consists
of High school (Islington High), Police Station, Community Center,
and vacancy for residents to reside.

RICHMOND |
Richmond
in St.Mary was a property first owned by a
family named Meek, and was first known as “Meek Spring”.
Purchased by the Duke of Richmond, who resided at Richmond Castle,
it later took his name.
The
town of Richmond was the home of Jamaica's first parish council
building. The town was onced one of the most busy and activity filled
towns. The train station which was the main form of transportation
provided a medium for heavy business transactions. The town was
very busy most of the time because of businesses and employment.
The presence of a Market Place, Police Station, Court house, Public
Works, Experiment Farms, Cocoa Board, Banana Export, Post Office,
Gas Station and Parish Council.

AGUALTA
VALE |
There
are no physical evidence available of the first establishment of
the Aqualta Vale building. However, the Aqualta Vale estate was
purchased by Thomas Hibbert, a wealthy slave merchant of Kingston
in 1760, the year of the Tacky Rebellion.
It was a vast 3000 acre property of woodland and pasture overlooking
the Wag Water Valley and Aquata
River, with the town of Annotto Bay
way off in the distance.
Originally
planted in coffee, it later became a large sugar plantation and
bleeeding pen. It was said to be the site of one of the largest
Taino burial grounds.
